A systematic review was conducted to gain insight into the outcomes of various treatments for OUD. 8 electronic databases were utilized to find peer-reviewed articles published between January 2008 and October 2019. 2,356 articles were found, 46 met the inclusion criteria and they were from North America, Europe, and Asia. It was found that MOUD during incarceration was correlated with continued treatment after release, lower re-incarceration rates, and lower overdose death rates.
Bottom Line: This systematic review of 46 articles found that MOUD during incarceration has been found to be beneficial before, during and after incarceration to decrease risks associated with active opioid use.
